VW gets Rivian's tech. . which is good for VW. What does Rivian get? More debt. Per the press release, "Initially VW will invest $1 billion in Rivian through an unsecured convertible note that will convert into Rivian’s common stock subject to certain conditions upon the later of receipt of regulatory approvals and December 1, 2024. VW is expected to invest a further $4B as part of the transaction" With Rivian losing almost $2 bill/qtr, I don't see how this deal even slows down Rivian's certain path to bankruptcy

So they are diluted a bit more than 9% and the stock went up 30%... If this billion counts in earnings that means the quarter loss will look much better, maybe even approach zero which might fool many but really changes nothing. The simple truth is that it must be very possible to turn the company around. Vertical integration for instance so the effing headlights don't cost 1000$ each. It's packaging plastic and a couple of LEDs, the margin must be crazy. But so far zero indication that they understand cost.

Wait, VW wants Rivian's software?? is that not a bankruptcy declaration for VW? Never mind what prospect it is for Rivian, what does that say about VW. I knew VW have been struggling with their software for years but you just fire and hire some guys. Infotainment software is not 4bn dollars hard. I would steal some game developers, they are often not paid a lot. To decide to rely on Rivian, a company that might not be here in 2 years, that's crazy. What am I missing here. This doesn't compute but I'm glad I wasn't short Rivian just now. 19% of float is shorted, that could cause some squeezing as it rises to what the clueless analyst set to 18$ a share. Could we see Rivian go to 25... until the sobriety that is the quarterly report. Maybe some kind of VW infusion will figure on earnings and make it look prettier than it is. By all means rise rise rise. We gotta know more about this deal because this doesn't make sense.

I think this makes sense for rivian. 5-10% dilution is definitely worth it if they can stabilize their business and maybe even get access to additional VW resources. Certainly not a deal done from a position of strength, but also not a stupid deal either, imho.

VW funds will bring Rivian's super attractive small SUV EVs to market. VW will help Rivian keep cutting production costs. We'll likely see some Rivian EVs rebranded as VW. For woke, Musk hating ESG investors, RIVN + VW is a viable alternative to TSLA.

The question is, what is the price that Rivian will have to sell the Gen 2 vehicles for to get to profitability? If it’s $80k a unit, Rivian is done. Fisker 2.0. Must be under $45K to be a competitive/compelling product. I just don’t see it happening.

Gali, I don't think you're right about Uber. Uber is a company that solved a few massive problems: 1) incentivize people to drive in certain areas, 2) coordinate a time and location between people, and 3) ensure they have a good interaction. When you remove the driver from the equation, most of Uber's benefit is obsolete. Transportation as a service will be the main means of transport, but the Tesla Robotaxi app will be enough and also include Rivian cars. p.s. I was a software engineer at Uber from 2016 to 2018

This is great news and could be the shot in the arm that Rivian so badly needs. Still, VW is bureaucratic to an extreme and has a well-known toxic corporate culture. Hopefully Rivian will not be badly affected by this and continue to grow.

Zonal auto networks are not rocket science. Speaks to VW's insecurity in this technology that they felt a need to obtain it. Yet another nail in Cariad adventure. Biggest problem with this kind of investment is that it revalues Rivian at this new level. Not unusual in the current climate for startups. Odd for an already public. Bought themselves a year or so.

VW buys 10% into the company’s lowest price ever and gets access to Rivian’s Technology? Wonder if they get any Amazon’s van technology too? Perhaps a eVW/Rivian factory coming to Europe or Mexico? More to come for sure
